Punxsutawney Area Hospital proudly recognizes Siobhan Barnett, LPN, as a recent recipient of the prestigious DAISY Award—an honor celebrating nurses who exemplify extraordinary compassion and clinical excellence in patient care.
Barnett’s journey into nursing began in the United Kingdom, where she trained at the Kingston and Richmond School of Nursing in Kingston upon Thames, Surrey. The program, known for its rigorous, clinically intensive two-year curriculum, laid a strong foundation for what would become a remarkable career spanning more than four decades. For the past 42 years, Barnett has dedicated herself to the nursing profession, including an impressive 34 years of service at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.
Throughout her career, Barnett has remained deeply committed to the human side of healthcare. She describes the relationships she builds with patients, families, and the community as one of the most meaningful aspects of her work. “Knowing that I make a difference to someone’s day with the littlest acts, whilst doing my job, is so heartwarming and so rewarding,” she shared. “I love that every workday is different, bringing care and safety to my patients and coworkers being my daily goal and love.”
Receiving the DAISY Award marks a milestone moment in Barnett’s career. She expressed both humility and gratitude upon learning of her nomination. “I feel so humbled and honored that a family took time to nominate me. It’s incredible that a family’s perception of what I consider to be just doing my job touched them so much.”
Paula Spack, Vice President of Patient Care Services at Punxsutawney Area Hospital, praised Barnett’s long-standing commitment to excellence, stating, “Siobhan has been providing excellent, compassionate care, to the PAH medical/surgical patients for decades. She is well deserving of the DAISY award!”
The DAISY Award is part of a national recognition program established by the DAISY Foundation—an organization founded in 1999 by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who passed away at age 33 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). Deeply moved by the compassionate care Patrick received, his family created the foundation to honor nurses who provide exceptional clinical skill and heartfelt compassion. Today, the DAISY Foundation recognizes nurses across all roles and stages of their careers, from students to lifetime achievers, reinforcing the critical role of compassion in healthcare.
At Punxsutawney Area Hospital, all nurses are eligible for this distinguished recognition. Nominations are submitted by patients, families, and colleagues through forms available throughout the hospital, at discharge, or online at www.pah.org. Submissions are accepted year-round and reviewed three times annually by an internal committee through a blinded process.
DAISY Award recipients receive a commemorative pin, a “Healer’s Touch” sculpture, and access to a variety of professional development opportunities, including educational discounts, seminars, journals, and conferences.
Siobhan Barnett’s recognition is a testament not only to her decades of dedication but also to the profound impact of compassionate nursing care. Her story serves as an inspiring reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness can leave a lasting impression.
